In an environment where trust is in short supply, a pseudonymous actor’s track record is important if they want to operate on the dark web in the future. Over the years, dozens of large DNMs have been established and eventually shut down by law enforcement, including AlphaBay, Dream Market, Wall Street, and, most recently, Hydra. Investigators used the market to purchase methamphetamine, pills containing fentanyl, the personally identifiable information belonging to numerous people and a United States passport, the charging documents say. Understanding the Darknet Market
Marketplaces are ordered clockwise according to their closure dates in ascending order starting from Silk Road. The observation that trading volumes recover quickly after unexpected marketplace closures suggests that users may move to other dark marketplaces15,36. In May, a joint law enforcement operation with the codename SpecTor that was coordinated by the EU law enforcement agency Europol resulted in the seizure of Monopoly’s criminal infrastructure and the arrest of 288 suspects. Law enforcement agents also seized over $54 million in cash and virtual currencies, 850 kg of drugs – including amphetamines, cocaine, MDMA, LSD and ecstasy pills – and 117 firearms.
We find that the top two destination marketplaces experience an increase in the trading volume share starting 2 days after the closure, and saturating about 6 days after with a share of \(27\%\), more than double the share at the time of closure. The second top destination, on the other hand, increases its share from 5 to 8.7%. From a seller’s perspective, the business model of darknet markets is appealing because they can reach a global audience and sell products that would be difficult or impossible to sell through traditional channels. For example, drug dealers can use darknet markets to sell drugs without the risk of getting caught, and weapons dealers can sell guns and other weapons without needing a license. Counterfeit Goods – Counterfeit goods, including luxury items such as handbags and watches, are also sold on darknet markets. These products are often of poor quality, but they are sold at a fraction of the price of the genuine article. Despite demand for legitimacy, the world of darknet markets is rife with shady characters, scams, and instability.
In fact, much of the Russian-language DNM ecosystem emerged from such forums. However, in the wake of Hydra’s takedown many Russian vendors set up independent vendor shops and automated Telegram shops employing Telegram shop bots, although this did not imply a wholesale move away from DNMs. Hydra vendors also offered a robust array of money laundering and so-called “cash-out” services, which allowed Hydra users to convert their bitcoin (BTC) into a variety of forms of currency supported by Hydra’s wide array of vendors.
In order to gain information on the analysed marketplaces, we collected additional data from the Gwern archive on dark marketplace closures1. To compile comprehensive information, we also used law enforcement documents on closures as well as a number of online forums31,32,34 dedicated to discussing dark marketplaces (see Supplementary Information Section S2). Out of the selected marketplaces, 12 were subject to an exit scam, 9 were raided, 3 were voluntarily closed by their administrators, and 7 are still active. Out of the 31 marketplaces, 3 are marketplaces dedicated to fake and stolen IDs and credit cards.
This was followed by oversampling of the remaining categories to increase the number of these listings in the sample, resulting in an equal representation between all categories, each consisting of 450 listings. To reduce the number of listings within each category, we randomly selected listings (without replacement) from the data until we reached 450 listings. To increase the number of listings within a category, we used “SMOTE” (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique), which synthesizes new unseen data points (Chawla et al., 2002). Such new data is generated by first randomly selecting a listing of that category and finding the k (5) nearest neighbors of that listing within the feature space. Then, one of the neighbors is selected at random, and a new data point is created at a random point between the two listings in their feature space.
The darknet market refers to an online marketplace that operates on the dark web, a part of the internet not indexed by traditional search engines. It provides a platform for the buying and selling of goods and services, often with a focus on anonymity and privacy.
Characteristics of the Darknet Market
- Anonymity: Users often utilize Tor or similar software to mask their IP addresses, ensuring transactions remain private.
- Cryptocurrency Usage: Payments are primarily made using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin to enhance anonymity.
- Diverse Offerings: The marketplace features a broad spectrum of goods, from legal products to illicit substances.
- Decentralized Structure: Many darknet markets are decentralized, making them harder to shut down.
Common Goods and Services on Darknet Markets
While darknet markets host various types of transactions, several categories are particularly prevalent:
- Illegal Drugs: Many markets facilitate the sale of narcotics, with vendors often providing detailed descriptions of their products.
- Stolen Personal Information: This includes credit card details, social security numbers, and more.
- Hacker Services: Services such as hacking into accounts, DDoS attacks, and other cybercrimes can be found.
- Counterfeit Items: These may include fake IDs, clothing, and luxury goods.
- Weapons: Some markets offer firearms and other illegal weapons for sale.

How to Access the Darknet Market
Accessing the darknet market requires specific software and steps. Here’s a simple guide:
- Download Tor Browser: This browser enables you to access the dark web.
- Obtain a VPN: A Virtual Private Network adds an extra layer of security.
- Find Market Links: Trusted forums or guides often provide up-to-date links to current markets.
- Research Vendors: Before making a purchase, check reviews and ratings of vendors.
- Make Transactions Safely: Always use cryptocurrencies and never disclose personal information.
Legal Implications
Engaging in transactions on the darknet market can have serious legal consequences:
- Legal Risks: Purchasing illegal goods can lead to criminal charges.
- Scams: The prevalence of fraud can result in financial loss and no recourse for recovery.
- Exposure to Law Enforcement: Authorities continuously monitor dark web activities, and users risk getting caught.
- While it appears Covid has put this BTC fundraising plan on hold, the announcement makes it clear that Hydra plans to expand.
- (Bitcoin trading exchanges are platforms that allow users to trade Bitcoin for other cryptocurrencies or fiat currencies.) Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of our dataset, where transactions within the square are the ones included in the dataset.
- Even if you aren’t perusing darknet markets, true anonymous browsing will keep you safe from prying eyes — such as governments and your ISP.
